Three cases studies are required. Choose two case studies below. Fred is a student at a small rural community college. He is a pre-engineering student. Linda does not typically work with pre-engineering students. She mentions this to Fred and offers to help him set an appointment with his assigned advisor who specializes in helping students to prepare for engineering majors.

The advisor-advisee relationship traditionally supports students as they identify and attain their academic, career, and personal goals. At the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition, we expand the consideration of advising to include advising as a student-centered process which assists students in making intentional connections, creating coherence out of the disparate parts of the curriculum, reflecting on the similarities and differences among ways of knowing and how they complement each other. As tuition continues to rise and public funding for higher education diminishes, the value and cost of attending college have been placed under a microscope. Therefore, it is important that institutions have a defined set of student learning outcomes for career advising that go beyond just looking at graduation statistics. Robbins and Zarges suggest that assessment be connected to the values and vision of the institution as well as to the mission of advising at the institution.

These case studies are designed to be discussed with Coordinators and other advisors to gain input, support, and possible answers to scenarios. These events depicted in these Case Studies are fictitious. John is a first semester freshmen who is about to meet with his advisor for his pre-registration meeting. He has thought about what classes he wants to take in the spring semester. He came to the conclusion that he wants to take 12 credits because he will be busy traveling with his adventure club throughout the semester.
