Although I consider her work to be full of quality, I must agree with the above statement as, for me, reading Plath's poetry was quite a disturbing experience. The rain seems relentless and the background setting dull at best. Therefore, it is also likely to that readers can relate to the text. Through it, Plath emphasises the failure of organised religion, thus rejecting the beneficial qualities of the hope that religion normally provides.

In the first stanza, the mother describes the child's "clear eye" as the one completely beautiful and perfect thing she knows. She wants to fill the eye with colors, ducks, and "the zoo of the new. The poem was written about two weeks before she committed suicide, and is most likely about her son Nicholas, who was just under one year old at the time.
